If it quacks like a duck…

We were treated to an excellent meal at Pomegranate Restaurant at Vergenoegd wine estate near to Stellenbosch yesterday. It was a stunning day in Cape Town and we sat outside and afterwards we were treated a rather unusual sight; a duck parade! The farm has more than 1000 ducks that they use to combat snails and insects in the vineyards and we were treated to a “parade” of around 450 ducks. Quite a special sight – 450 “ducks in a row”!

But it got me thinking about an old saying that goes something like this…”if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are it is a duck!” Which brings me to the point of this post…

A few people have recently asked me about “Lyoness” a global multi-level marketing scheme that is making inroads in South Africa. As I listened to their explanation and questions it sounded a bit like a pyramid scheme to me and so I did a bit of investigation. It turns out that there appears to be more than enough reason to be sceptical: too many claims of “scam” and too many pending court cases in Europe when you “google” it. I would not touch it.

As the old saying goes, “if it looks like a pyramid scheme, walks like a pyramid scheme and quacks like a pyramid scheme…
